A 1976-batch IPS officer of the West Bengal cadre, Wanchoo was earlier a joint director in the Intelligence Bureau. He was picked up by the Prime Minister in 2004 to head the elite force of SPG, formed after Indira Gandhi’s assassination that provides the highest class of security to the Prime Minister and other VIP's.
